Referendum and Timeline
On June 23, 2016, a referendum was held in the United Kingdom to determine whether the country should remain a member of the European Union (EU).
The referendum resulted in a vote to leave the EU, with 52% of voters supporting Brexit. The UK formally withdrew from the EU on January 31, 2020.
Transition Period and Single Market
Following the referendum, the UK entered a transition period that lasted until December 31, 2020. During this period, the UK continued to follow EU laws and regulations.
On December 31, 2020, the transition period ended and the UK left the EU single market and customs union.
Formal Withdrawal
Brexit officially took place at 23:00 GMT on January 31, 2020, or 00:00 CET on February 1, 2020.
